"The Man With The Smallest Penis In Existence And The Electron Microscope Technician Who Loved Him" has a duplicate review with two votes i.e. "Itsy bitsy teeny weenie". Not being a wasteful sort, may I suggest attaching these votes to the legitimate review (by myself).

Not a duplicate review as such...

I like Koli's review here; have no problem with it standing. However, I am unclear as to why it was previously rejected for me here, which I think is at least as apt, so that I had to submit an inferior version instead.

Without wanting to get dragged into a 'declined review' discussion, I will just offer my quick thoughts on why it might be. Bear in mind I don't know either movie, so I could be off the mark.

Seems to be there must be hundreds of movies where people 'look out to sea' or 'naval gaze' - so 'Naval gazing' of itself is probably generic. I presume that's why your review was declined until you added the Meryl Streep qualifier

The potential difference I can see with koli's review is that whereas in 3,000 other films an act of naval gazing is incidental to the plot, and in some films it is a small but important part of the plot, in koli's chosen film it is the plot. Even then, it probably doesn't get past 'borderline generic', but it may have been enough for benj or the MERPs to let it through

No, I don't think so. I'm unclear as to the gazing aspect of Koli's film, but I'll assume there is one. However, from what I remember, it is definitely a particularly distinctive aspect of The French Lieutenant's Woman (the standing on the cliff and all that). It is not as though 'gazing' just means 'watching' or 'looking'; there is a quiet/thoughtful element to it.

I agree that the standard for the novelty films is looser, although it has to be the case that theoretically things are equal (and I hate when perfectly proper films get ambushed here in a similar way). However, I maintain that the review fits The French Lieutenant's Woman better than any other (that I know of), since (i) there is actual gazing and (ii) it is core to the film.

Would these reviews be considered the same for Fantastic Four?

The practice is based on the theory. Reviews are not approved at random, but according to various requirements; it is just that those requirements are not applied consistently.

Anyway, just came back into this thread because that review cropping up in my F.Y.C. made me realise that, due to being so used to it, I had neglected to point out a key aspect. It is not just a pun on a random phrase: the character's 'naval-gazing' is an archetypal example of navel-gazing. Thus, in its original form, I still think that it was definitely sufficient for that film.

Midnight Cowboy--'Hoffman is walkin' here'.

Both Derek in Orlando & Pope George Ringo are in step.

There are votes involved.

ALSO

Spidey 2:

both Montgomery and Titanpa have "M.J. marries astro-NOT".

The film The Best of Dr Suess" is misspelled. The last word should be "Seuss".

Also very amusing is the fact that they are no longer right next to each other - one now has 5 votes and the other has 9! Clearly a few people rather judiciously voted for one rather than t'other!

Actually, on the link I gave, they are right next to each other, becuase I have the reviews organized by Reviewer Rank. And that doesn't seem likely to change since neither one seems to be writing reviews anymore.
