So, where does that lead us? The Revenant is a fine film, but the story is almost non-existent and will be remembered mainly a technical achievement (similarly to how Birdman is starting to be forgotten except for the technical achievement). Carol is an utterly forgettable, confused, and unappealing film that if it weren't for Cate Blanchet's performance, would have been totally unnecessary. Straight Outta Compton was among the most complex films of the year in terms of both theme and production values, and yet it only got one award nomination. On the other hand, I'm glad to see the level of respect mad Max is receiving.

Interesting call with Christian Bale. In general I think he's exceptionally disciplined and has the gift. This sunk in for me with "Harsh Times" which was a snubbed film IMHO. I think the tension in this is constructed better than for Training Day.

But to the question of The Big Short, yes he nails the performance but is it a Top 5, even against other supporting cast? I think I'm with you on this.

I haven't seen Room - it looks amazing. Best actress?

I also agree with your top ten list elevating Mad Max and The Force Awakens.

Here's decent run through for Oscar cramming this week.

Thanks as always for these insightful posts, GH!
