Posted - 08/17/2005 : 23:06:05 Hi there,
I'm the guy doing the cinema reactions study. The responses given by you kind people have helped me hugely, and I'm very grateful! I'm into my last four weeks now, and will then proceed to notify you with any results, if you're still interested of course.
And if there aren't any objections, then i'd also like to post another quick survey. It will essentially be the same, but will require people to have seen either:
Sin City Charlie and the Chocolate Factory Madagascar or League of Gentlemen's Apocalypse
So I will go ahead and post it unless anyone feels I'm subverting the fourum in unwelcome ways :)
Thanks again, and I look forward to the near future when I can further devote myself to reviewing in miniature!
Regards,
Nick Madeira SSPSSR University of Kent UK
See below for survey! Thanks |

If you have seen Sin City, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, Madagascar or League of Gentlemans Apocalypse in the cinema, and you have 5-10 minutes to spare, I would appreciate your filling out the following survey. If you have experienced or initiated clapping in a screening of another film, please refer to this instead, or simply give details of the screening with the most active audience. Nevertheless, any additional information will be extremely useful.
NB: It may be simplest, and less heavy on the forum traffic, if you copy the full text into an email. In that case, please send your answers, with the subject film: <NAME>, to [email protected]
Please feel free to send any queries to the same address.
Cinema Reactions Study
Personal details (optional)
1 Your age:
2 Your location:
Screening details
3 Film:
4 Type of cinema (e.g., independent, multiplex, etc.):
5 Location of cinema:
6 Time of screening (e.g., Thursday evening, night of release):
Your experience
7 Do you consider yourself to be a fan of this movie, or its production team, or any other aspect of the franchise? If not, please skip the next question.
8 If yes, please specify to what degree on a scale of 1-10, where 1 is only slightly more than not being a fan, and 10 means that this film or its creators, more than any other cultural phenomenon, define who you are.
9 What was your motivation for seeing this film? (e.g. good reviews/good publicity/random selection/forced against your will/other).
10 Taking into account your previous answers, did you enjoy the film? (If it helps, give the film a rating from 1-10, where 10 is positive).
11 Did you feel at the time that the film got the recognition it deserved? Explain (e.g. from other members of the audience, from the wider public, etc.).
12 Was the audience reaction as expected, given both the atmosphere at your particular screening and the nature of the film itself?
13 Did you, at any point, feel the need to make your appreciation or otherwise known to the wider audience (e.g. clapping, jeering, shouting aloud)?
14 Did you act on this?
15 Would you have done so if there were a more obvious consensus in your favour? (e.g., you could sense the emotions of others would lead to applause in the auditorium, etc.).
16 Are there any further observations or comments you would like to add?
Many thanks for your time and for your interest. Any subsequent findings will be made available at your request.
Nick Madeira, SSPSSR, University of Kent, UK.

I'll start proceedings below. And if you can think of any other films with rupturous reactions foxboy (or can I call you 'the'?), please respond with those... But all will become clear.
