Best Picture What Should Win: Mad Max Room What Shouldn't Have Been Nominated: The Revenant What Was Snubbed: Inside Out
Best Actor What Should Win: Leonardo DiCaprio, The Revenant What Shouldn't Have Been Nominated: Eddie Redmayne, The Danish Girl What Was Snubbed: Jake Gyllenhaal, Southpaw

Best Supporting Actress What Should Win: Alicia Vikander, The Danish Girl What Shouldn't Have Been Nominated: Rooney Mara, Carol What Was Snubbed: Oona Laurence, Southpaw
Best Director What Should Win: George Miller, Mad Max What Shouldn't Have Been Nominated: Alejandro G. Inarritu, The Revenant What Was Snubbed: F. Gary Grey, Straight Outta Compton
Best Cinematography What Should Win: The Revenant What Shouldn't Have Been Nominated: Carol What Was Snubbed: Bridge of Spies
Best Film Editing What Should Win: Mad Max What Shouldn't Have Been Nominated: The Revenant What Was Snubbed: Straight Outta Compton
Best Score What Should Win: The Force Awakens What Shouldn't Have Been Nominated: Carol What Was Snubbed: Mad Max
Best Sound Mixing/Editing What Should Win: Mad Max What Shouldn't Have Been Nominated: The Revenant What Was Snubbed: The Good Dinosaur
Best Production Design What Should Win: Bridge of Spies What Shouldn't Have Been Nominated: The Revenant What Was Snubbed: The Force Awakens
Best Visual Effects What Should Win: The Force Awakens What Shouldn't Have Been Nominated: Ex Machina What Was Snubbed: Avengers: Age of Ultron
Best Adapted Screenplay What Should Win: The Martian Room What Shouldn't Have Been Nominated: Carol What Was Snubbed: Creed
Best Original Screenplay What Should Win: Straight Outta Compton What Shouldn't Have Been Nominated: Bridge of Spies What Was Snubbed: The Gift
So, where does that lead us? The Revenant is a fine film, but the story is almost non-existent and will be remembered mainly a technical achievement (similarly to how Birdman is starting to be forgotten except for the technical achievement). Carol is an utterly forgettable, confused, and unappealing film that if it weren't for Cate Blanchet's performance, would have been totally unnecessary. Straight Outta Compton was among the most complex films of the year in terms of both theme and production values, and yet it only got one award nomination. On the other hand, I'm glad to see the level of respect mad Max is receiving. |

Posted - 02/22/2016 : 09:17:23 Interesting call with Christian Bale. In general I think he's exceptionally disciplined and has the gift. This sunk in for me with "Harsh Times" which was a snubbed film IMHO. I think the tension in this is constructed better than for Training Day.
But to the question of The Big Short, yes he nails the performance but is it a Top 5, even against other supporting cast? I think I'm with you on this.
I haven't seen Room - it looks amazing. Best actress?
I also agree with your top ten list elevating Mad Max and The Force Awakens.
Here's decent run through for Oscar cramming this week.
Thanks as always for these insightful posts, GH! |
