Best Picture What Should Win: La La Land What Shouldn't Have Been Nominated: Lion What Was Snubbed: Jungle Book
Best Actor What Should Win: Ryan Gosling, La La Land What Shouldn't Have Been Nominated: Andrew Garfield, Hacksaw Ridge What Was Snubbed: Tom Hanks, Sully
Best Supporting Actor What Should Win: Michael Shannon, Nocturnal Animals What Shouldn't Have Been Nominated: Dev Patel, Lion What Was Snubbed: Aaron Taylor Johnson, Nocturnal Animals
Best Supporting Actress What Should Win: Naomie Harris, Moonlight What Shouldn't Have Been Nominated: Nicole Kidman, Lion What Was Snubbed: Tammy Blanchard, Tallulah
Best Original Screenplay What Should Win: La La Land What Shouldn't Have Been Nominated: The Lobster What Was Snubbed: Tallulah
Best Adapted Screenplay What Should Win: Arrival What Shouldn't Have Been Nominated: Lion What Was Snubbed: The Jungle Book
Best Animated Feature What Should Win: Zootopia What Shouldn't Have Been Nominated: My Life as a Zucchini What Was Snubbed: Finding Dory
Best Cinematography What Should Win: La La Land What Shouldn't Have Been Nominated: Moonlight What Was Snubbed: The BFG
Best Score What Should Win: La La Land What Shouldn't Have Been Nominated: Lion What Was Snubbed: Kubo and the Two Strings
Best Visual Effects What Should Win: The Jungle Book What Shouldn't Have Been Nominated: Deepwater Horizon What Was Snubbed: The BFG
Best Animated Short What Should Win: Borrowed Time
So, where does that lead us?
Lion is a decent film that treads water during the 2nd act. The interview on "60 Minutes" with the real-life person that Lion is based on told the story in a concise and emotionally engaging way. It did in 10 minutes what Lion does in almost two hours.
The Jungle Book was among the year's most complex films of the year in terms production values and had a screenplay that really worked, and yet it only got one award nomination.
This is the first year where I felt there was a perfect category: Best Animated Short. Another short by Dreamworks that was really good, but wasn't eligible for a nomination, was "Kung Fu Panda Secrets of the Scroll." It is available on Netflix and is about a half hour long.
On the other hand, I'm glad to see the level of respect La La Land is receiving.

Posted - 03/09/2017 : 11:33:39 I also look forward to this list.
In no way diminishing Viola Davis' well earned Supporting trophy, I thought Manchester-By-The-Sea would have been greatly diminished without Michelle Williams to tie the (burned out) room together.
