I caught most of an old Frank Sinatra film on TV but missed out on the title. It was an interesting watch for several reasons.
1. The liberal leanings of the cop played by Frankie. The first murder is of a prominent gay man. The rest of the detectives sneer and make coarse remarks. Robert Duval turns up as a gay-bashing cop who gets a smack from Frankie for his predjudice. Another ambitious cop strips a suspect and ties him to a chair. More payback from Frank. Dirty Harry he isn't.
2. The curiously robotic performance by the female lead ( Lee Remick) who is "easy". With a hairstyle that could deflect a 20mm Cannon Shell, she has a curious Stepford quality about her. As with a lot of 1960's female parts it must have been a grim one to play.
3. The scenery-chewing performance by the innocent gay man who is sent to the chair. With rolling eyes, tics, head-rolling and twitching, he must have inspired Nicholas Cage!
4. The static camerawork and crappy sound. Many scenes are "one-shots" with no camera movement , not even pulls or close-ups. It was like watching in the theatre at times. I think someone had been at the sound - it was flat or echoey and there was absolutely no ADR.
5. Ralph Meeker turns up as a crooked cop.
A guilty pleasure. No idea what the title is tho  |
