Here are my reactions to this year's Oscar nominations (I'm only commenting on categories where I have a strong and informed opinion):
Best Picture What Should Win: Get Out What Shouldn't Have Been Nominated: Call Me By Your Name What Was Snubbed: Coco
Best Actor What Should Win: Gary Oldman, Darkest Hour What Shouldn't Have Been Nominated: Timothe Chalamet, Call Me By Your Name What Was Snubbed: Richard Gere, Norman
Best Original Screenplay What Should Win: The Big Sick What Shouldn't Have Been Nominated: Lady Bird What Was Snubbed: Coco
Best Adapted Screenplay What Should Win: The Disaster Artist What Shouldn't Have Been Nominated: Call Me By Your Name What Was Snubbed: Blade Runner 2049
Best Cinematography What Should Win: Blade Runner 2049 What Shouldn't Have Been Nominated: Mudbound What Was Snubbed: Star Wars: The Last Jedi
Best Production Design What Should Win: Blade Runner 2049 What Shouldn't Have Been Nominated: Beauty and the Beast What Was Snubbed: Star Wars: The Last Jedi
Best Film Editing What Should Win: Dunkirk Three Billboards What Shouldn't Have Been Nominated: Baby Driver What Was Snubbed: Detroit
Best Score What Should Win: Star Wars: The Last Jedi What Shouldn't Have Been Nominated: Dunkirk Three Billboards What Was Snubbed: Coco
Best Sound (both categories) What Should Win: Star Wars: The Last Jedi What Shouldn't Have Been Nominated: Baby Driver What Was Snubbed: Coco
Best Animated Short What Should Win: Lou What Shouldn't Have Been Nominated: Negative Space What Was Snubbed: Cradle
So, where does that lead us?
Call Me By Your Name is an episodic bildungsroman with good intentions, but unfocused in theme. There's a certain creepiness factor to the idea of a relationship between a man in his late twenties and a boy who is about seventeen. Its not a bad film, but its flawed and not particularly memorable.
Coco was essentially flawless in terms of story and execution. It got two well-deserved (and predictable) nominations for Animated Feature and Song, but it deserved much more. Michael Giacchino's score in particular is unique in the way it blends Hollywood adventure film score of the John Williams variety with Latin cultural arrangements and melodies.
The big surprise of the year is the respect for which Get Out received despite its underdog status as a horror comedy about African American anxieties. The Academy was wise to see the cultural and aesthetic value the film has.
I have not yet seen Shape of Water or Three Billboards. |

Nice! I'm especially glad to see your mention of Richard Gere. I'm not even a Gere fan but, my God, he was excellent in Norman. |

I was less than smitten by The Shape of Water, but I truly thought Three Billboards Outside... was a stellarly wonderful film. Hoping a lot for Frances McDormand and Sam Rockwell (despite his comment that acclaim is going to ruin his career!!) |

Same here. I never disliked him, but never really liked him either until I saw Norman. I was hoping for a Best Original Screenplay nomination for Norman too, but figured that was more of a long shot. |
