How can you moderate a film review if you haven't seen the film? Perhaps you've seen alot, but have you really seen all of the 4000+ films on the data-base?

I've seen a lot of films, but no- I've not seen all the ones in the database. Since I'm based in the UK, in most cases I haven't even seen brand new films as they arrive on the US chart either. I have to rely on a combination of my obsessive following of the latest film release news, my working knowledge of films, referencing materials (e.g. Halliwell's, the imdb, or any apparently related websites) and, in worst case scenarios, the feedback either via email or the Further Details box on resubmission of a review.

In other words, you're correct- I can't (and probably no one person could) hope to have the knowledge base to approve or decline hundreds of thousands of reviews for thousands of films... but I'm sure giving it the best shot I can

Plus, he does a pretty good job at it.

Infallible? No (since he obviously refuses to concede the brilliance inherent in my recently declined review for "Making the Grade").

Astute, creative, magnanimous, and generally fair? Yes (witness the site). Again, this site is a private forum provided by a single individual, so quite obviously the site and its workings go according to him-who-took-on-this-gargantuan-task-for-no-monetary-compensation. I happily accept this fact in light of what must be the significant sum of money I have saved in thoroughly enjoying this stuff all while not paying a cent more than my monthly ISP fee. And face it, if you're like me, sometimes it takes a while to understand all these puns: you've got to admire a person who gets them all!

Yes, one may criticize the approval process (yes, unbelieveably, it's actually been criticized before), but then, one may also criticize the Iowa caucus (not really all that democratic, I say), the continued presence of a monarchy in any country after the seasoning of the Industrial Revolution (no comment), or the process by which golden tickets were dispersed to grant five persons (and their respective escorts) into the Wonka factory (since Slugworth was present at each ticket unveiling, the process smacks of conspiracy). There's always room for alteration and the like, but then, there will be a Democrat nominee, various Royals will provide us with entertainment (if nothing more than gloating at their mistakes and flaws), and Charlie will own that damned factory, which means we all get chocolate.

And we all want chocolate.

I think I'm actually going to print this out and frame it

I agree with Mguyx's praise of the approval process, and kudos to Benj for asking nothing of us except reviews, but I hope that wasn't a pop at the monarchy? What with the friendly nature of the site, I sincerely hope to avoid a debate over the virtues of the monarchy. . I'm good at those, being a firm monarchist.

I agree, and as for Conan's comment, I laughed, realised what I was laughing at and stopped, feeling guilty . I'm also a Mercurist ().

If the approval process is truly the work of one sole and single person, then I'm amazed not only at the breadth of film knowledge displayed [or the cheerful willingness to trust a nice pun], but also the person-hours of work involved. THANX!!! The late, lamented Dysfunctional Family Circus site, which I believe comes closest to this concept, required the labor of *several* editors.

Welcome! We may not be tony, Randall but we're fun. Start reviewing and join in the jollity. Don't be bashful; vote to your heart's content. Ill be watching for your first offerings (reviews that is). Good luck!

btw, we are led to believe that there is only one reviewer but I am beginning to believe the room full of monkeys theory. Check out some of the 'Planet of the Apes' reviews that have snuck through.

Thanks, Lemmy -- I've already submitted a few reviews and am waiting to learn their fate with bated breath. Which is better than abated breath, I guess.

Welcome Randall. Good to see you here. I applaud your Titanic review. YOu seem to got the hang of it. Hope to see more soon. One never hopes that something will never happen to Benj. But that question lingers. What happens to this site? I respect Benj for the man hours he puts in. But maybe he needs a back up plan?

Oh how morbid a thought -- though I have wondered the same thing on occasion (but more like "What if the '28 Days Later' thing really happened in England and benj got bitten? Would he still moderate the site, or would he maybe just approve really angry reviews only?" -- honest!)

I think the back-up plan is to lure a semi-significant percentage of the world's population into loving the site so much that they form an international protectorate devoted to keeping him safe and healthy for fear of not getting reviews posted. Oh! And think I was duped so easily!

Thanks to Titan & Lemmy for the warm welcome. [I almost typed "Thanks for warm welcome." -- but I can use more than four words here.] This surely is fun. I'm learning more about how to write for this site from the ones which are declined than the ones which are accepted. There's such a wonderful display of wit/brevity here; you people are hilarious. Out of respect for our British host, I even wrote one today that uses the word "knickers."

Titan, thanks for TITANIC kudos -- I respectfully think there's even better to come. After the fact, I might have changed it to "Locked lips sink ship.", since that's EXACTLY what happened, but once it makes the site, I figure: that's it.

Thanks again for welcoming me into your lovely bizarro community.

Approval process? We had a short duel tonight on TARANTULA, yet Fearless Leader responded to my final sortie within :60. Yes, it was a new movie, but still: what a great job he's doing. I bow.
