The Erroll Flynn/David Niven answer is close, but no cigar. You're in the right time frame. The two actors I'm thinking of made their first film together in the 1930s. They're not generally thought of in the same sentence, and are usually thought of as having worked in very different genres. I won't tell you which studio they were contracted to, but it's not RKO or Warner Bros.

It's hard to imagine The Adventures of Robin Hood starring anyone but Errol Flynn, but it almost got made a year earlier with an actor you'd never expect to see prancing through Sherwood Forest. In fact this actor never pranced anywhere; when he moved, it was with great menace and a barely contained rage, which is what most of us remember him for, in spite of the fact that at heart he was a song and dance man who yearned to entertain audiences, not frighten them. Who is it?
