My maternal grandmother would have had kittens at the sight of such language.
My paternal grandmother was made of sterner stuff, and I remember an occasion when I was in my late teens and she took me to the theatre in Newcastle-upon-Tyne (where they can be a bit rough). There was a lot of strong language in the play - which I think was called The Jailbirds though I'm not sure - and there was silence among our little group when we came out. I was a bit embarrassed and wondered how Gran would react. My aunt broke the silence, asking her mother what she thought of the play. My Gran didn't hesitate; she said: 'Well, there were too many 'fuckings' and 'pissings' for my liking but otherwise it was quite good'.
Until that day I had no idea that grandmothers were capable of swearing. |
