how are reviews scored and what do they mean? some of my reviews that i think are pretty ordinary have 5/5, and some that i think are especially witty have 2/5 or are unscored. someone please explain.

?/5 represents the score you give the film... there are no scores for your reviews per se--just site reviewers voting on other reviewers' reviews.

The scores listed beside reviews are not actually scores for the review, but for the film (as given by the author of that review).

If you're interested in a 'score' for the review itself, you should check out the number of votes cast against it (the number beside 'Vote' in the very bottom bar below the review bubble).

(I really should get rid of that score, shouldn't I? It just confuses people )

Noooooooooooo!!!!

(That's my howl of protest)

I love seeing what others think of any given film, especially when they're utterly deluded about it's quality ( or lack of same )If anything I'd like to see it extended just to see exactly who scored what. How the hell has American Pie got a rating over 3. Someone must have given it a 4 or 5!! Name and shame I say

Hi damalc, once you hit 500 reviews you unlock the power of the dark side to do a few things different. I think it is 1000 reviews that lets you score 6 out of 5.

I like the scores too. I use them a lot when deciding whether to watch a movie or not (although I give more weight to IMDb given their voter base is much bigger). And like Rovark I sometimes like to see what others have scored a movie.

Perhaps it's worth having the odd newbie miss what it's for? Or perhaps a brief note could be added to the user page stating what it's for? Or perhaps move the score up so it's underneath the movie title?

Or, perhaps a section could be added to people's home page (the Stats page) in one of the empty areas (eg, to the right of the Stats) with a blown-up review bubble fully describing what all the things mean, ie, the fact that the date is the posting date, what the score means, and the fact that the number in brackets is votes for the review. People would only need to see it once.

Now that I have wrapped my head around the idea of scoring....Where do you go to do it. I cannot find the link???

It's the little brown bar things beside film names in searches or next to the scores on the film page. Just click somewhere along the bar to rate it from 1 to 5.

I always check fwfr and imdb ratings before seeing a film, but what I rely on most is Film Affinity.

It has a rating for every film, which is about as useful as imdb - but what is really neat is that if you rate some films yourself, the site will run some algorithms to compare how you vote with how other users vote, and will find the 20 or so users whose votes most match yours.

You can then check out for any film you're thinking of seeing not only what the total average rating is, but also the individual scores each of your 'film soulmates' has given it, and the average score your 'soulmates' have given it. I find it suprisingly accurate in predicting if I'm going to like a film or not.

You can also add a list of 'friends' to check how they rate a movie - I only have one friend (and he probably doesn't even know it) - noncentz. Obviously that's the gauge I rely on most ....

Can't remember who found the site first, but it was somewhere in the fourum

Is the 'vote lowest' a new feature, or am I just very unobservant.

I'd answer that, but you probably wouldn't notice.

Think I'll save that for when I get round to reviewing 'Scary Movie 3'
