I've mentioned this before. I don't care what it is recorded as with the B.B.F.C. and equivalents. It looks bad enough as SE7EN; Se7en is just totally ridiculous.

I quite like the gimmick (despite the fact it's 'Seven' here on fwfr). If you accidentally read it as Seven first time, then I think it achieves it's purpose, even if it throws literacy out the window.
'Thir13en Ghosts' is another matter entirely, however.

Little bit off-topic, but I thought we should welcome WalRus - don't think we've had a Russian (or at least Russian-based) reviewer/fourum member before, have we? Only 5 reviews so far, but a couple are pretty damned good for a newbie. (Matrix Revolutions and Four Weddings and a Funeral).

Well, it wouldn't really be an accident, seeing as that is what one is supposed to do. However, no-one could read it and fail to notice that there was a 7 instead of a V, if that is what you mean. Anyway, the main point is that it was only ever designed to work with capitals. Also, some cover/poster designs do not use it.

I don't know- maybe I'm a bit dim, but when I skim-read Se7en for the first time, I didn't spot the 7 in it at all. I suppose it's the way the human mind works to fill in the blanks sometimes, much like how you might misread a word in a sentence and stop and go "Hang on- that doesn't make sense", go back and realise your mind kind of assumed what the word was from the part of it you read. But the thing of this is, that it DOES make sense as a quick read, so it's quite possible if someone never went back to read the word again they *would* mistake the 7 for a V, even forming a clear mental image in their mind of it being a V.
Anyway, my point (as spurious as it is) is that I can't believe my brain is spazzing out and I'm alone in missing the 7 initially.

Not only did I miss the "7" the first time I saw it on a poster, I also initally read through similar numeral orthography in the remake of THIRTEEN GHOSTS [I think they spelled it "THIR13EN"]. In both cases, the illusion was vastly aided -- no, achieved -- by the graphic designer, who deliberately chose a typeface for the official logo that would help to hide the substitution until you really pored over it.
Also important was the fact that these were very common words which are scanned rapidly. If numerals had appeared in the name "Hudsucker," for example, you'd notice it right off.
Also, what do you say when you're referring out loud to the third ALIEN film? A stickler would insist on "ALIEN cubed," for that's what's written on the poster and shown as the title card. |
