Was Elliott chosen because the first and last letters are E and T? |

Sounds like a coincidence to me. |

I don't know for sure but it could be as much of a coincidence that the Lethal Weapon main characters initials are reversed.
Sal I would think you are probably right though sometimes these things are a coincidence and pointed out to the writers afterwards. |

I always felt that was the reason even when I was a kid. I wouldn't be surprised if it was deliberate, but I have no proof that it is. |

Totally unrelated, but my then girlfriend / now wife's initials are "E.T." and the movie came out just before we left home for college.
Her mom sent her a bumper sticker that said "E.T. Phone Home" |

Yup to GHcool -- my feeling is also that it was probably intentional. I'll delete my review if I can confirm it. |

In the novelization, the family name also began with a "T" - Taylor. So Elliot's initial were also ET. That was certainly not a coincidence. According to IMDB, Elliot's last name is not heard in the movie. That doesn't sound right. |

I remember reading the book, too.
In it, he lured ET out of the shadows with M&M's. (ET traced the 'M' with his finger before tasting it).
M&M's apparently didn't want to be in a movie about an alien, so they used Skittles instead. Didn't hurt Skittles popularity much |

You mean Reese's Pieces.
Variations on the name Elliott mean "My lord is god" according to a couple of baby name sites, or "God's gift" according to another.
That said... speaking of Taylor. |

Doh! Okay, it's been a LONG time since I watched the movie, sorry (can't stand the revisionist BS where they chase the kids and everyone has a walkie-talkie in their hand)

One of the fun things about being a parent is showing your kids the movies you loved growing up.
I just showed my kids E.T. (twin 6-year-old girls and a 3-year-old boy) and they loved it. They also love Star Wars.
If my brainwashing is successfull, they will never see an episode of Hannah Montana until they go off to college. |

How did they find the scene where the authorities come along and take Elliott and E.T. to be plugged into monitors? I found that bewildering and frightening, as I didn't understand who they were and what the quarantine tunnel was all about. Whenever I see somewhere in a film being quarantined with that sort of plastic material, it reminds me of that feeling.
It was one of the first films I saw at the cinema, maybe the first. I don't actually really remember the original viewing experience, perhaps because I also saw the film at other times during my childhood. |

By the way, in response to my original question, I decided that it was sufficiently likely to be intentional that I amended my review to the "Elliott et E.T." that was in the last F.Y.C.T.H. round. That way, there is added E/T play even if this is right. |

Sheer coincidence. And here's another: in 2001, the name of the computer, HAL, is IBM transposed back one letter. Both Clarke and Kubrick denied to their deaths that it was anything other than a coincidence. |
