My favorite care that I ever drove - my Grandpa's 1936 Plymouth Sedan, with suicide doors, horsehair seats, a windshield that opened out from the bottom to let in fresh air, airhorns and the starter pedal next to the gas pedal. He bought new from the factory in early 1936 for $900 and had to wait 6 months to get it. When he died in 1963, it remained the only car he had ever owned or driven. I waited patiently until I was old enough to drive and got to drive it around one memorable summer. Too cool.

Wow. Great story. I imagine $900 was a huge amount of money at the time.

It was pricey, but not as pricey as the car my uncle bought at the same time. His first car at about 24 years old, it was a white 1936 Plymouth convertible with a rumble seat. The cost of it was a huge $1100. He still had that car when he died in 1983, though he didn't drive it anymore. My family didn't seem to get rid of things. A whole family of packrats, I guess.
